The world was falling apart, at least that is what it must have looked and felt like for those who experienced the exile and were intentionally assimilated into the Babylonian Empire. For those who wondered if it was even possible for their faith to survive in Babylon, Daniel 1 is indeed good news and illustrates that with God's help, it was even possible for their faith to thrive in Babylon.
